Argentina Recap

While the SBMRL has raced in South America before, January saw the league pay their first visit to Argentina, to race Autódromo Oscar Alfredo Gálvez. With the sun high and not a cloud to be seen, the grid lined up as follows:

P1 – Delilah Whipplefilter (FR)
P2 – Launch Bornado (FR)
P3 – Sheila Dinkum (RM)
P4 – Bubba McQueen (SR)
P5 – Whiplash (SR)
P6 – Jaap Snellrijder (RM)
P7 – Rask Sjofar (SB)
P8 – The Stig (SB)

The cars got off the line cleanly and then accelerated into the first corner. The long run up meant that all the cars were fighting for position around Curva Numero Uno. It was in the second bend, Curva de la Confiteria, that a leading pack began to take shape. The Sprite Racing duo of Whiplash and Bubba were able to pull ahead with Jaap alongside them. Sheila fell a bit behind, but other than that, the cars stayed fairly close in two groups through the first sector.

The tightly packed cars bump their way around Curva de la Confiteria

As the field moved on to the second sector, Jaap got a jump in Curva De Ascari, but was soon run into by Whiplash in the following corner. Jaap’s car suffered enough damage that he was forced to retire from the race after having been in the lead just moments earlier.

Jaap is out as Whiplash squeezes him to the inside

In the ensuing chaos, Delilah was able to get around both Whiplash and Bubba to take the lead. Her teammate, Launch, however, was not faring as well. The former champion couldn’t keep pace with the others and was square at the back.

While the Sprite Racing duo battled with Delilah in the arena section, the Stig and Rask started to make their moves to reel the front runners in. Sheila, who had been struggling at the rear, also started to move up in the third sector. The field was so tightly bunched that when it came time to pit, all 6 cars other than Launch were in pit lane at the same time.

Everyone comes in!

The second lap saw Whiplash and the Stig start a battle in earnest for the top spot on the podium. Bubba ran a solitary third through the first sector, but the battle for fourth place raged in earnest. Delilah, Sheila, and Rask, went back and forth with little to separate them.

Whiplash pulled out a moderate advantage of the Stig as they entered the arena, but Bubba was starting to fade. Sheila found speed down the long back straight and was soon challenging Bubba position. Rask and Delilah charged ahead in their pursuit as well. While Sheila reeled Bubba in, Rask and Delilah soon did the same.

Cars start to tighten up again in the arena

The Senna ‘S’ saw the Stig take a late race lead, and it looked like he was surely heading for his 3rd victory of the season. However, Whiplash was able to hit Horquilla just right, exiting with speed down the pit straight and a comfortable win. The Stig would have to settle for second place.

Whiplash seals the victory

Behind them, Sheila had nearly caught up, but the same was true of Delilah and Rask. Unfortunately for Rask, he got it all wrong in the final corner. Sheila came out ahead of Delilah, but it was the Force Ravenswood rookie that had speed on her side. She passed Sheila down the final straight to round out the podium.

Rask’s misery was compounded by the fact that both Bubba and Launch came barreling around the last corner ready to pounce. Despite some margine to work with, Rask’s engine wouldn’t produce. Bubba sailed past him for 5th, and he just barely held on over Launch as the final two finishers crossed the line.

Whiplash records his 2nd victory in the past three races and third victory overall. His run from 5th on the grid to the checkered flag matches the 4 spot improvement he saw at Interlagos last year. He’s now up to second place in the driver standings.

The Stig continues his hot driving with a second place finish to go with two victories on the year. His run of success truly dates back to Monaco just over a year ago. If not for a clunker in the season opener and a DNF in Singapore, he’d likely be running away with things. As it stands, he’s just 4 points up on Whiplash.

Delilah’s podium is a much needed shot in the arm for the struggling Force Ravenswood. She’s currently beating her veteran teammate, and demonstrated some resolve in how she battled back from spending a good portion of the second lap as far back as 6th.

At the other end of the spectrum, former Regency Motors teammates Jaap and Launch are left looking for answers as they struggle to return to their previous form.

Despite trailing in the standings, Force Ravenswood scored more points than Regency Motors, who had their worst race of the year. Sprite Racing’s strong showing has them just a few points behind Scandinavian Blitz.

Argentina Preview

After a longer break due to the holidays, the SBMRL is gearing up for the first race of the new year. This will be the league’s first visit to Argentina to race Autódromo Oscar Alfredo Gálvez in Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires has hosted motor racing events since the early 1930’s, but Formula 1 raced the first Argentine Grand Prix in 1953. The country has had an on-again off-again relationship with the world’s top racing category ever since, last racing there in 1998.

The current track is capable of running in two different configurations, and the SBMRL will take the longer one that includes the arena section and the Senna “S” rather than the flat out lake run.

The pit straight is extremely long, with the starting grid smack in the middle of it. That will give the field a decent run up to the aptly named Curva Numero Uno. It’s a smooth right hand bend that will keep speeds down but shouldn’t be too much trouble.

The circuit curves in on itself into Curva de la Confiteria, which is essentially the reverse of the previous corner. A smooth left then takes the field to be big sweeping right that leads into the back straight.

In the configuration to be raced, this is then the longest straight aside from the pit straight, and it’s only about half as long. Still, drivers who managed to get the rhythm right to this point will be well positioned to fly down the straight at top speed. It ends at the high speed Curve de Ascari, which should present little trouble to the drivers.

It’s hear that the track will finally force a reduction in speed. The next corner is a sharp hairpin that marks the entry to the arena section. This is one of those unusual corners that fast in, slow out is the optimal approach, as the arena section is slow. Viborita can’t be taken quickly, and the Curva del Ombu is one of the sharpest.

A moderate straight then leads into the Senna “S”, which rejoins the arena to the rest of the circuit. This is likely an area that will catch some people out, and a great spot for overtaking. From here, there’s a long straight to Horquilla and the home stretch.

Starting Grid

Unlike the last race, this race’s starting grid is fairly straight forward. The usual, reverse order of driver standings conditions apply. Only Bubba and Whiplash, who are tied on 49 points, require additional thought. Since Whiplash finished ahead of Bubba in Monaco, he starts behind him here.

  1. Delilah Whipplefilter (FR)
  2. Launch Bornado (FR)
  3. Sheila Dinkum (RM)
  4. Bubba McQueen (SR)
  5. Whiplash (SR)
  6. Jaap Snellrijder (RM)
  7. Rask Sjofar (SB)
  8. The Stig (SB)

Pit selection is then in order of team standings, but we currently have a tie with Regency Motors and Sprite Racing. The tie is broken by points scored in the last race since they have the same average starting position.

  1. Scandinavian Blitz
  2. Regency Motors
  3. Sprite Racing
  4. Force Ravenswood

Argentina is not the home race for any driver.

Monaco Recap

The SBMRL made their annual trip to Monaco for December’s race, with a typically comfortable day in store.  The grid featured penalties for the Stig and Jaap, which resulted in the following starting positions:

P1 – Delilah Whipplefilter (FR)
P2 – Rask Sjofar (SB)
P3 – Sheila Dinkum (RM)
P4 – The Stig (SB)
P5 – Launch Bornado (FR)
P6 – Jaap Snellrijder (RM)
P7 – Whiplash (SR)
P8 – Bubba McQueen (SR)

The field got off to a clean start with the pecking order seeing no substantial changes through the first corner.  The field remained tightly packed, largely as predicted, with the first sector not revealing any particular changes of note.  The field only began to separate a bit once they were in Casino and Mirabeau.

Early race action

The Stig and Sheila led the way into Loews but nearly the entire field was jockeying for space behind them.  Only Whiplash lagged behind.  The Stig led the way through the tunnel with Sheila struggling to keep pace.  Delilah led Launch, Rask, Bubba, and Jaap behind them.

Through the tunnel

The Stig kept up his pace into the third sector, but Sheila was caught up by the others at Tabac.  Launch also began to struggle, with Whiplash recovering from a miserable first half lap to put himself back in the mix.

Sector three saw Regency Motors start to make their move.  While the Stig pulled into the pits ahead of the field, Rask, Jaap, and Sheila rounded the Anthony Noghes corner.  Delilah and Launch were now in a direct battle with both of the Sprite Racing drivers.

The Stig leads over a tight group of challengers

Sheila stayed out instead of opting for fresh rubber, which had her passing the Stig around Sainte Devote at the start of the second lap.  The others all went in, with Rask emerging first, followed by Jaap and Bubba.  Force Ravenswood were the ones that came out at the back and would have the most ground to make up over the final lap.

Sheila and the Stig jockeyed back and forth through the first sector, but the Stig pulled ahead at Mirabeau.  Behind them, a similar battle between their teammates was raging, and soon all four cars were slogging around the Loews hairpin.

Sheila can’t keep up

Whiplash, Launch, and Delilah fought behind them, and soon disaster struck.  Launch tried to take the inside line in Loews and get ahead of Whiplash, but a small misjudgment meant a collision and the end of the race for Launch.  Adding insult to injury for Force Ravenswood, Bubba was able to take advantage of the mayhem and catch up with Delilah.

Launch crashes out

The driver who was able to take advantage of the crash induced caution was Jaap, who flew down the tunnel at speed in an effort to catch up with the Stig.  The race’s long time leader suddenly found himself passed at the chicane, but Jaap’s momentary brilliance was undone with a poor approach at Tabac.

Jaap’s temporary lead

While the Stig pulled away at the swimming pool, Jaap was soon accompanied by Sheila and Rask.  Stig took the checkered flag as Rask got an edge on the others in the final two corners.  He would hold on to take second place with Jaap just fractions of a second behind.  Sheila was comfortably fourth.

The Stig on his way to victory

As for the rest of the field, Whiplash, managed to run a smooth third sector, but it wasn’t enough to threaten the others.  In the end, it was a quiet 5th place finish.  Less quiet was the battle against ignominy that Delilah and Bubba were mired in.  The two went back and forth in the third sector, with Delilah initially ahead, then Bubba, then back to Delilah.  Bubba managed to find a better line through Rascasse and Anthony Noghes, leaving Delilah just short.

The Stig (SB) 4 1 1
Rask Sjofar (SB) 2 3 2
Jaap Snellrijder (RM) 6 4 3

Bubba McQueen (SR) 8 5 6
Delilah Whipplefilter (FR) 1 8 7

The Stig gets his 3rd Monaco victory in 4 races, which also makes him the first driver to win at three times at a single venue.  It’s his 7 career victory, which ties him with Jaap for the SBMRL career lead.

Rask snatched the second podium of his short career thus far.  It marks a fine turnaround from the last two races, where he finished 7th and 8th.  Jaap’s third place finish matches his performance last time out in Singapore.  Despite his track record of success, the only other time he’s had consecutive podiums was three in a row near the end of the SBMRL’s inaugural season.  The top three finishers now sit as the top 3 in the driver standings.

Scandinavian Blitz’s 1-2 finish marks the 5th time that has happened in SBMRL history.  They are also now the only team to have done it more than once, having previously accomplished the feat at the Nurburgring in the 2016-17 season.  Given that we’ve only had five 1-2 finishes, it’s no surprise that this is the first time that we’ve had each team see their cars cross the line in consecutive order*.  As a result, Scandinavian Blitz has taken a healthy lead with Force Ravenswood falling to the back after their disastrous result.  Sprite Racing was far enough ahead of Regency Motors that those teams now sit tied in the middle.

* Note that at Austin in the 2016-17 season, 4 of the 5 teams saw their cars cross the line one after the other.  The only team that didn’t was Red Bull, who saw Mater win and Danger Wheel finish 4th.
