Sebring Recap

The fifth test of the season brought us to sunny Florida to race Sebring International Raceway.  While the day of the race was balmy and calm, the race was turbulent and dramatic.  With a four-way tie for 3rd place in the driver standings heading into the race, there was a lot at stake and the effort put forth certainly demonstrated that people knew it.

The starting grid had Mater at the pole followed by Ice.  The next four drivers, all tied in the standings, were seeded in reverse order of their finish in Monaco.  This put Nero in 3rd and the Scandinavian Blitz drivers on row 3 to themselves.  Regency Motors took up the rear, with Jaap starting his 4th race in the 8th grid position.

P1 – Mater (Ryan)
p2 – Ice (Lonny)
P3 – Nero (Lonny)
P4 – Danger Wheel (Ryan)
P5 – Captain Slow (Jason)
P6 – The Stig (Jason)
P7 – Launch Bornado (Frank)
P8 – Jaap Snellrijder (Frank)

The cars got off the line cleanly and, as expected, the relatively forgiving first corner failed to cause the stratification we’ve seen so frequently in the early phases of other races this season.  Typically, the first cars in will create some separation and then split up into a few groups, but Sebring kept everyone close in the first stage.

Sebring_Lap1_Turn1

It began with Ice and Mater leading the charge into Turn One Club Hospitality.  Nero was slow off the line, allowing Danger Wheel and the Stig to get in front, but they couldn’t get away.  Captain Slow even clipped his teammate coming out of the first bend.  Jaap Snellrijder was the only driver not to join the others through the first turn.  However, he caught up with the pack in North Gate Corner soon enough.

The approach into the hairpin  was where true separation started to take place.  Mater, Ice, and Launch Bornado, who had come all the way from 7th to 3rd, found themselves edging ahead of the rest.  The others formed a trailing pack, with the lone exception of Jaap, who wasn’t able to find the right gear and would have to play catch up in the second sector.

Sebring Lap 1 Cunningham Approach

The three leading cars found themselves smoothly through Cunningham Corner, while Jaap tried desperately to rejoin the pack.  Ice was able to find the line straight into Tower Turn to take a notable lead over Launch and Mater.  Behind them, Nero found his line through Cunningham and on to Tower Turn as well, joining the front runners.  Both drivers from Cobalt hitting both corners just right put them in a good spot.  The Stig being Nero’s victim for 4th position.  At the back, Jaap couldn’t keep up with Captain Slow and Danger Wheel.

While Ice extended his lead, Nero passed Launch and Mater on his way to Gendebien Bend.  The Stig had caught up to them in the meantime, and Jaap had caught up to Captain Slow and Danger Wheel in Tower Turn, resulting in two distinct trailing packs chasing down both Cobalt drivers.

Sebring Lap 1 Back Straight

The long back straight saw everyone but Ice start to coalesce in a mad bid for 2nd place.  Ice was already in the pits when The Stig and Nero were entering Sunset Bend.  Mater was doing his best to keep up and Jaap had now moved all the way up to 5th place, ahead of Launch, Danger Wheel, and Captain Slow.

Nero was leaving the pits when Ice was beginning to round North Gate Corner, the second corner on the track.  It seemed a foregone conclusion that Ice would win at this point, but there was still a lot of track to go.  The Stig’s pit wasn’t as smooth as planned, and he came out just behind Mater.  Danger Wheel followed into the pits, but needed more than just a tire change.  Jaap, on the other hand, took a clean set of tires and was on his way again, pipping Danger Wheel on the exit.  Launch Bornado and Captain Slow would pit significantly behind the rest.

Sebring Lap 2 Ice Out In Front

With Ice well in front and The Stig and Mater were forced to do battle just to catch Nero.  Jaap and Danger Wheel fought to catch them and join the hunt, which is something that Jaap was able to do heading into North Gate.  Behind, Launch quietly did all he could to catch up.

Ice was clear through the hairpin when his challengers were coming out of North Gate.  Nero was the first of the group to the hairpin, but Mater and Jaap were starting to close the gap.  The Stig, unfortunately, couldn’t muster the pace to keep up, and was soon starting to worry about Danger Wheel and an agressively charging Captain Slow.  Launch was now the driver far in arrears after having been up at the front during the first lap.

Sebring Lap 2 Sector 1

Next came Section 2 and the combination of Cunningham Corner and Tower Turn, which had frustrated drivers on lap 1.  Ice took this stretch cautiously, but Nero floored it and hit Cunningham just right to catch up with his teammate.  Mater and Jaap were left to watch. They would have to pull off a similar feat to have any chance of reeling Cobalt in.

Sebring Lap 2 Nero Catches Ice

Nero smootly navigated Tower Turn, where Ice had to slow down a bit to get his line right.  This was an opportunity that the others needed to grab onto, but Jaap came up just shy in Cunningham Corner and Mater took a conservative line.  Behind them, the Stig was closing in, hoping to join the race for 3rd place.  Launch was not being successful in his attempts to keep up with Danger Wheel and Captain Slow.

Sebring Lap 2 Gendebien

As Nero barreled down the long back straight, Ice calmly took his approach through Gendebien Bend.  Mater and Jaap were within striking distance, although time was rapidly running out.  By now, the Stig was losing his composure and falling further behind in 5th place.

Nero easily took the checkered flag, the rest of the field not even visible in his mirrors and half a lap ahead of the back markers.  However, the rest of the race was getting tense.  Jaap came out of Le Mans Curve with the speed to catch Ice, and as they charged toward the final turn, they were wheel to wheel with Mater hot on their heels.

Sebring Lap 2 Nero Takes Checkered Flag

Trailing in the distance, Launch managed to find his line through Tower Turn and a suddenly responsive engine saw him zoom past Danger Wheel, Captain Slow, and the Stig.

In the battle for second, Ice coolly slid into Sunset Bend while Jaap took an unfortunate approach.  This secured a 1-2 finish for Cobalt, and left Jaap and Mater fighting it out for 3rd place.  Jaap carried speed into the corner and was able to cut off Mater’s line, forcing the green car to downshift or risk a crash.

Sebring Lap 2 Battle for 2nd

Despite a valiant effort from the Stig, Launch was able to complete his second half push to finish in an uncontested 5th place.  There wasn’t much drama left, as Captain Slow finished easily ahead of Danger Wheel.

Nero’s victory after starting in 3rd place on the grid marks the farthest back any driver has started from and won the race.  We’ve now had 5 different winners in 5 races.  Cobalt taking the top two podium spots is easily the best points haul a team has had in any race to date.

Jaap’s 5 slot climb from 8th to 3rd place is the largest single race improvement to date, but Nero’s win pulls him to within 4 points of 1st place in the driver standings.  That’s the closest anyone has been to him all season.  Mater’s 4th place finish helped him catch up in the standings quite a bit, but he remains last in the driver standings.

At a team level, Regency Motors retains the lead, but Cobalt put a big dent in it.  Scandinavian Blitz, with a 6th and 7th place finish, had the worst overall race.

Who Knew?

In each of the last 4 races (Austin being the lone exception), the Stig was in 4th place after the first lap.  His only finish higher than 5th was his win in Monaco.

Monaco Recap

A race through the streets of Monaco is always an adventure and the SBMRL’s fourth race of the season had plenty of ups and downs accordingly.  Before the race began, there were two notable announcements.  First, the White Team decided to officially rebrand themselves as Scandinavian Blitz, much to the delight of fans who found the previous name to be exceedingly bland.  Second, Ryan was unable to attend, so Jason and Frank took the reins for the Green Team.

The race began with a Scandinavian Blitz driver in pole position for the second time this year.  The Stig began in 2nd place in India but utimately finished in 7th.  Would he struggle again or be the third consecutive winner from pole?  Nero and Jaap were at the back of the pack for the second consecutive race with the rest of the field slotted in reverse order of the standings as usual.

P1 – The Stig (Jason)
P2 – Ice (Lonny)
P3 – Mater (Frank)
P4 – Captain Slow (Jason)
P5 – Launch Bornado (Barbara)
P6 – Danger Wheel (Jason)
P7 – Nero (Lonny)
P8 – Jaap Snellrijder (Frank)

The excitement began from the get go as the race got off to a grinding halt for Mater, who was the first driver to suffer a stall on race start.  His inability to get off the line forced Launch Bornado to the inside and a minor collision before Launch even crossed the starting line.  At the front, Ice managed to beat the Stig to the first corner while Captain Slow was similarly quick.

Monaco - Lap 1 Turn 1

Unlike previous races, where the first corner caused a decent amount of stratification between cars, Monaco saw two groups emerge with a 3 car leading pack and a 5 car trailer.  Mater was among the followers even in the back pack and his lack of pace would haunt him throughout the entire race.

The Mirabeau turn was where Captain Slow began to create some separation at the front.  Ice and the Stig found themselves struggling to keep up, with Danger Wheel and Launch Bornado suddenly hot on their heels.  The slowdown in the Loews hairpin gave a false sense of tightening of the cars at the lower speeds.

Monaco - Lap 1 Loews

However, as cars began to come out of it, there was quite a bit of space that developed between them.  Separation would grow quickly as cars went from their lowest speeds of the track to their fastest through the tunnel.

Monaco - Lap 1 - Captain Slow with commanding lead

Captain Slow extended his lead by expertly navigating the Chicane and Bureau de Tabac.  He found himself well ahead of Ice, the Stig, and Danger Wheel, who represented the race for 2nd place.  The remaining four cars remained close until Mater found his engine wanting again.  He was unable to keep up with others and drifting off the pace in a lonely last place.

Monaco - Lap 1 View from Mater

As the first driver around the final turn, Captain Slow had done a fine job preserving his tires, but his high speed aggression left him needing gearbox maintenance and a trip to the pits.  It was here that things started to turn for a number of drivers.  While the good Captain was making his way towards Sainte Devote, Ice and Stig each went in for quick pit stops to replace tires.  They were both on their way quickly.  Danger Wheel also went to pit, but was blocked from leaving by the others, and so forced into a technical stop (see the pit rule comments for details).

Launch Bornado and Nero also went in for pit stops.  Nero being the only car to lose ground on entering as he didn’t carry enough pace out of the final turn.  Jaap, however, having been sparing on his first lap, opted not to pit.  His gambit suddenly found him surging past the others all the way into third place, behind Captain Slow and Ice.  The Stig and Danger Wheel were hot on his tail, and Launch Bornado was closing.  While Nero languished, Mater chose to follow Jaap’s lead and forego the pits in a desperate move to catch up.  Unfortunately, his car simply would not respond to his efforts and he was unable to use the front straight to catch even Nero.

Monaco - Pit row

At the front, Ice had taken a small lead over Captain Slow into Loews, but the big move was further back.  Launch Bornado charged hard into the Casino turns, passing Danger Wheel for 5th place.  Ice and Captain Slow couldn’t find their speed heading towards the tunnel, and suddenly the Stig and Jaap were right up there with them.  Only the Stig was able to find the right line through the Chicane, though, and like his teammate on the first lap, this was able to give him a fairly comfortable lead heading into the third sector.

Launch, meanwhile, absolutely screamed through the tunnel and was suddenly right in amongst Ice, Captain Slow, and Jaap.  As that group of four cars moved on to the marina district, Nero found his speed wanting while Mater suddenly found a bit of hope.  The two would battle to the end for the final two slots.

Monaco - Lap 2 Tunnel Straight

The Stig coolly navigated the third sector to take a bit of the drama out of the winner’s race, but behind him fierce battles raged.  Captain Slow had fallen off the pace at Bureau de Tabac, the very section of the track that saw him take a large lead during the first lap.  However, at various points in sector 3, Ice, Jaap, and Launch all found themselves leading the incredibly tight group of three cars vying for second.  First it was Ice in front, then Launch, then Jaap, then Ice again.  In the end, Launch carried the most speed through the final turn and was able to cruise down the front straight ahead of the other two.  Ice managed to pip Jaap for 3rd place.

Monaco - Lap 2 Race for 2nd

The back half of the drivers saw Captain Slow narrowly hang on to a 5th place finish ahead of Danger Wheel.  Mater, meanwhile, came from incredibly far back to edge ahead of Nero for 7th, thanks to a more aggressive line through the final two turns.

Nero (CO) 7 7 8

The Stig became the third consecutive driver to win a race from pole position and that leaves Scandinavian Blitz as the only team to have won two races this year.  Those wins account for all of the team’s podium appearances.  As stated earlier, Mater became the first driver to stall on race start, a mistake from which he never recovered.  Jaap went from 8th to 4th place for the 3rd straight race.  Mater’s drop from 3rd to 7th ties the second worst showing after the Stig went from 2nd to 7th in India.  This leaves the Regency Motors drivers 1-2 in the standings, with 4 drivers all tied for 3rd place with 47 points each.

At the team level, Scandinavian Blitz’s performance sees them jump into second place, leapfrogging both Cobalt and the Green Team.

India Recap

Buddh International Circuit was the ideal setting for the third contest of the SBMRL season.  With sunny skies and temperatures around 70 degrees, the stage was set for an action packed race with cars getting pushed to the limit.  This race delivered on its high speed promise and then some.

Danger Wheel sat on the pole followed by the Stig and Launch Bornado, who started 2nd and 3rd, respectively, for the second race in a row.  The only other driver to start in the same position as in Singapore was Jaap Snellrijder, at the back of the grid.

P1 – Danger Wheel (Ryan)
P2 – The Stig (Jason)
P3 – Launch Bornado (Barb)
P4 – Mater (Ryan)
P5 – Ice (Lonny)
P6 – Captain Slow (Jason)
P7 – Nero (Lonny)
P8 – Jaap Snellrijder (Frank)

A clean start saw the field gunning for the first corner right away, with Danger Wheel and the Stig battling each other right off the bat.  Despite a fair amount of jockeying for position and wheel to wheel racing, the cars came through cleanly and began to set their sights on the long front straight.

Several cars were able to take advantage of their engine’s full potential, pushing all the way into 6th gear.  What was a bit less forgiving was the need to downshift at the end of that straight for the corner that awaited.  The cars that hit it just right found themselves passing the less accurate drivers.

Coupled with the more technical turns of the second sector, the original starting order was already starting to shake up.  Danger Wheel dropped all the way to 5th, where he battled it out with the charging Nero who could do no wrong.  That left the Stig and Launch Bornado at the front, with Mater hot on their heels.  The Cobalt duo, Danger Wheel, and Captain Slow made up the challenging group, while Jaap Snellrijder languished in last place.

Buddh - Lap 1 spacing

In the third sector, the Stig and Launch pulled away from the field while Captain Slow struggled, allowing Jaap to pass for 7th.  Between those two pairs, the Green Team and Cobalt battled.  After what had been a relatively clean lap for most cars, the pits would play a more significant role in this race than any that had preceded it.

Launch had managed to eke ahead of the Stig, but wore out some tires to do so.  Despite a clean lap, Launch opted for a quick pit to change tires in anticipation of a hard fought second tour.  For the Stig, this is where everything went wrong.  Needing to downshift in the final curve, he was unable to carry momentum into the pits.  It didn’t help much that his pit was the farthest along pit lane or that he needed a technical stop for minor repairs.

Buddh - Launch Bornado leads the start of lap 2

As Launch crossed the starting line first in preparation for a second go around, the trailing pack was just coming through the final corner.  Ice and Danger Wheel were the first to get there, and each took a different tack.  While Danger Wheel need to stop, Ice had run a clean first lap and decided to stay out, gunning it down the front straight in 5th gear.  Behind him, his teammate Nero went in.  The most significant move, however, was Mater’s decision not to pit.  Mater hit the final corner just right and blew past the pits in 6th gear, jumping all the way into 2nd and hot on the heels of Launch Bornado.

Buddh - Mater's gambit

With Launch and Mater well ahead, and Ice forgoing the pits, the Stig found himself in 4th place to start the second lap.  Danger Wheel’s quick pit stop had him close behind, while Nero pushed to catch up in the first two turns.  The Stig struggled with his car, which was unresponsive to his commands.  Conversely, Danger Wheel managed to reel in the front runners to take the lead he’d lost on the first lap.  Mater also passed Launch on the long front straight, but his gambit came at the expense of his brakes and gearbox.  The Cobalt cars, meanwhile, were able to join the front pack with the pedal to the floor.  After babying his tires on the first lap, Ice wore his tires heavily rounding Turn 3 in a desperate effort.

Buddh - Ice and Nero catch up on lap 2

Danger Wheel and Launch found separation in Turn 4 as the challengers worked to keep their more heavily abused cars on the track.  The two front runners found perfect lines through turns 5 and 6 and it quickly became clear that only a disaster would see either car finish lower than third.  Meanwhile, Nero managed to find an edge on Ice, who looked far better poised to take 4th than Mater given the conditions of both cars.  Behind them, the Stig marched along steadily with Captain Slow and Jaap both living up to the Captain’s name.

Buddh - Lap 2 battles

At the front, Danger Wheel and Launch charged hard into the final two turns.  Danger Wheel had the edge and chose a tight line in turn 9.  Launch, who’d run a clean second lap and had tires to burn, simply couldn’t match it.  Despite coming in faster, Danger Wheel’s edge was too great as he took the checkered flag.  Launch was left to settle for second.  Behind them, Nero established a comfortable 3rd position that would not be relinquished.  The rest of the field, however, was nowhere near set.

Ice, who was comfortably enough ahead of Mater and looked destined for 4th place, suddenly lost all feel for his car.  Captain Slow and Jaap, who had been so far behind over the first two sectors, suddenly started finding their lines.   They sped past the Stig and looked to add more.  Ice and Mater, both forced to drive cautiously, were no longer well in the distance.

Buddh - Late race action

Jaap managed to catch Ice in Turn 8, which Captain Slow was also able to take at a much higher speed than Ice’s all blue Cobalt.  Mater, meanwhile, wasn’t able to take speed into turn 9, and it was there that Jaap and Captain Slow passed him as well.  Jaap took the inside line that Danger Wheel had taken earlier to stymie Launch’s attempt for a pass, and this time Captain Slow was the victim.  Despite coming in at higher speed, he was forced to the slower, outside line.  Jaap took 4th and the Captain 5th.  Mater was able to limp home behind them.

Buddh - Jaap charges for the finish

At the back, the Stig did finally catch Ice, whose third sector can only be described as disastrous.

Buddh represented the first time this season that a car chose not to pit, with both Ice and Mater forgoing the chance to improve their vehicles.  Despite Ice’s last place finish, one can’t point to his pit decision as impacting the final result.  His tires were pristine and he had taken minimal damage.  It was really a combination of pushing hard on the second lap and simply not being able to maximize his car’s potential.  Mater, on the other hand, found himself in rather dire straights and having to drive conservatively.  He may regret his decision not to pit, but it was an understandable choice at the time.  Despite this, Buddh also represented the first race where all cars crossed the finish line.

Final Results

Danger Wheel (GT) 1 5 1
Launch Bornado (RM) 3 1 2
Nero (CO) 7 6 3

Danger Wheel earned the Green Team’s first victory of the year, while Launch and Nero both claimed their second podium in as many races.  Jaap’s amazing comeback, from last place in sector two to 4th place at the flag, keeps him atop the driver standings, but Nero continued to close the gap.  Like Captain Slow’s victory in Singapore did for him, Danger Wheel’s victory catapults him into 3rd.

From a team perspective, Regency Motors maintains a comfortable lead over the field.
