Malaysia Recap

Typically hot and humid weather greeted the SBMRL drivers on our trip to Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.  The third race of the 2016-17 season was just as hotly anticipated as this was another new track for the league.  With just two races in the books, the standings were still tight, and here is how the cars lined up on the grid:

P1 – Nero (Frank)
P2 – The Stig (Jason)
P3 – Captain Slow (Jason)
P4 – Launch Bornado (Frank)
P5 – Jaronimus Maximus (Geoff)
P6 – Danger Wheel (Ryan)
P7 – Jamonito del Verde (Geoff)
P8 – Mater (Ryan)
P9 – Jaap Snellrijder (Frank)
P10 – Ice (Jason)

A clean start when the lights went out meant that there was a legitimate drag race down the long pit straight to the first corner.  As cars gained speed, Jaap and Jamonito collided just as they crossed the starting line, leaving each car with minor body damage.  Nero was the first to reach turn 1, but Captain Slow took a temporary lead on the approach to the second corner.  It was Jaronimus, however, who established himself as the lap 1 leader by corner 3, a position he would not relinquish.

The second sector saw Nero take control of second place, pulling away from the pack aiming to catch up.  That pack consisted of Danger Wheel and the pairs of Scandinavian Blitz and Regency Motors drivers.  Captain Slow, the Stig, and Jaap all found themselves up in 3rd place during this stretch, with Launch and Danger Wheel trying to fend off Ice.  Jamonito and Mater trailed far behind.

Turn 7 proved to be the key corner on the first lap.  It was here that The Stig managed to catch Nero while Jaap’s efforts to do the same fell short.  That gave Danger Wheel the speed to pass him for 4th place.  Jamonito came charging from the back here as well, but he wasn’t quite so lucky.  He came in a bit too hot and the resulting collision with Captain Slow put him out of the race.

The remainder of the first lap saw Jaronimus take a commanding lead into lap 2 while Nero and Danger Wheel kept up with the Stig to create a tight battle for 2nd place.  Everyone dove for the pits, with a number of cars opting for a new set of tires after a hard fought first lap.  Nero came out of the fray in second place with Danger Wheel establishing some of his own space in third.  That left the Stig, Captain Slow, and Launch Bornado fighting for fourth.

As with the first lap, things would change dramatically throughout the second.  The first shift came with the Stig and Launch catching up with Danger Wheel on the approach to turn 4.  It was here that Jaap caught up to them and took a lead over Captain Slow.  Just one corner later, the Stig had found his line and caught up with Nero in the race for 2nd.  With Jaronimus running away with things the two cars charged forward barely ahead of the 4-way battled for 4th place.  Ice and Mater trailed at a distance.

Once again, turn 7 proved pivotal.  The 4-car pack found enough speed through turn 6 to allow three of them to catch Nero and the Stig in the battle for 2nd place.  Only Danager Wheel began to lag behind.

The Stig eked out a small advantage through turn 8, but Nero, Captain Slow, and Jaap were all hot on his heels.  Launch, meanwhile, had been forced to take a conservative line.  As the cars came out of the corner with the throttle pressed to the floor, Jaap was fastest down the straight.  Nero led the Stig and Captain Slow in pursuit, while Launch was just getting through turn 8.

Sepang is a track that rewards accurate driving through the series of quick corners in the third sector.  It also rewards blatant displays of speed down the dual hairpin straights that end and start each lap.  It’s impossible to go fast enough down these straights, but you also have to navigate the hairpin, and it was here that Jaap failed.  Carrying just a little too much speed into the final corner, Jaap spun out.  In many parts of the track, this would not have been a major problem.  He’d lose a bit of time but generally be okay.  Here, however, the impact was huge.  Instead of shifting up to 6th gear and cruising home with a runner-up finish, he found himself trying to right his car from a dead stop.

The rest of his challengers, had no such issues.  In fact, the Stig whizzed by him in just about no time at all.  Jaap’s teammate Launch, found speed to burn down the back straight and caught up with Captain Slow and Nero in the final corner.  Launch flew on to take 3rd while the Captain and Nero had a drag race down the straight for 4th.

When the distantly trailing pack of Danger Wheel, Mater, and Ice made the turn, Jaap still hadn’t crossed the finish.  In the end, he just barely eked ahead of Mater.  Danger Wheel’s 7th place finish represented a dramatic drop from 3rd place over the course of the third sector of the track, and likely would’ve been the story of lap 2 if not for Jaap’s disaster.

Jaronimus won his first race, notching up Osito Racing Company’s first win in the process.  His second consecutive podium gives him enough points to become the first SBMRL driver to lead the driver standings while having a DNF in the same season.  With Jaronimus’ win, only Jamonito and Launch have yet to win a race.  There are 4 other drivers with consecutive podiums: Jaap, Launch, Ice, and Nero. Nero is the only one of those who didn’t extend it to 3 consecutive.

The Stig’s 2nd place finish is his 3rd podium.  He has never finished 3rd or 4th in a race.  Despite his high finish, the fact that he started 2nd on the grid means that he hasn’t improved on his starting position since Singapore 2015, 10 races ago.

While Launch has never won, his 3rd place finish puts him in the lead with 6 podium finishes.  He now heads a pack of 6 drivers spaced 7 points apart, and Jamonito is just 2 points behind that group.  Launch’s 4th position on the starting grid means that he’s improved on his position in every race since the same Singapore races as Stig’s, when he started and finished 3rd.  Nero’s disappointing race, dropping from pole to 5th, means that he’ll start from pole again in Monaco.

On the team front, Osito Racing Company is now tied with Regency Motors atop the board, with Red Bull falling to 3rd place.  Scandinavian Blitz’s strong showing moves them out of the cellar and ahead of Cobalt, who are experiencing a tough season this year.

Austin Recap

A beautiful day for racing brought us to Austin, TX to race Circuit of the Americas for round 2 of the 2016-17 SBMRL season.  With just one race in the books for the year, the starting grid was the reverse order of finish from Spa-Francorchamps.  The only notable change was that Cobalt unveiled their official livery for the new season after having raced in a provisional livery in Belgium.  The new livery would be silver with teal highlights (Mercedes AMG Petronas).  Here, then, is how the cars lined up:

P1 – Mater (Ryan)
P2 – Nero (Lonny)
P3 – Jaronimus Maximus (Geoff)
P4 – Jamonito del Verde (Geoff)
P5 – The Stig (Jason)
P6 – Launch Bornado (Frank)
P7 – Danger Wheel (Ryan)
P8 – Captain Slow (Jason)
P9 – Jaap Snellrijder (Frank)
P10 – Ice (Lonny)

Starting from pole position, Mater was hot off the line with a flying start, but he couldn’t quite get the edge on the rest of the field into turn 1.  Instead, Nero and Jaronimus joined him for a three car leading pack that would be virtually unbroken throughout the entirety of the first lap.  Behind them, the race to the first corner was extremely tight.  With both Scandinavian Blitz drivers and Launch Bornado going three wide up the straight, Danger Wheel found no room to squeeze through and had to slam on the brakes to avoid collision.

Congestion before turn 1

Throughout the first lap, the leading trio battled back and forth.  Mater held the early advantage, Nero took charge from the esses through the middle of the third sector, and Jaro went out in front at the end of the lap.  None of the three were able to find any significant advantage over the other two.

Behind the front pack, the remainder of the field initially divided into two subgroups.  The challengers included Jamonito, Launch, The Stig, and Danger Wheel.  The trailers were Jaap, Ice, and Captain Slow.  Both groups saw their share of battles, but there just wasn’t much movement between them.  That began to change as the packs moved into the second sector and onto the long back straight, where Regency Motors saw both their drivers take big gambles.

Lap 1, Launch's gambit

Launch Bornado flies through turn 6

The first was Launch Bornado throwing caution to the wind, flying through Turn 6 in 6th gear.  The cost was heavy wear on both tyres and brakes, but advantage had been gained as he became the first legitimate hope to catch the front three.  The second charge came from Jaap Snellrijder, who managed to move up from the trailing pack to the challenging pack courtesy of some adept gear shifting that allowed him to carry speed onto the straight.  The Stig found himself heading in the opposite direction, finding his engine unwilling to respond to the demands placed on it.

Unfortunately for Launch, the earlier gamble came back to haunt him around the final corner.  He was forced to slow down significantly in order to safely reach the pits.  The need for fresh tyres and a brake repair allowed the challengers to catch up again.  His run in 4th was too adventurous, and he’d fall as far back as 9th before finishing in 6th.

The Scandinavian Blitz drivers, by now well behind the rest of the field except for Ice, both decided to skip the pits entirely.  Jamonito used a quick pit stop to begin his efforts to haul in the front runners, while Jaap’s pit crew wasn’t up to the same task.  The field stratified into more groups, with Mater and Nero leading the way.  Jamonito was able to catch up to this teammate in the esses to form the second group, with Jaap and Danger Wheel hot on their heels in the third.  The rest of the cars struggled to catch up.

Mater takes control as Nero falls behind

Mater takes control as Nero falls behind

Mater grabbed control of the race through Turn 4 after a mistake by Nero.  Despite more than half a lap remaining, the last real shot at catching Mater proved to be the back straight, but he drove flawlessly and the others lack the speed to catch him.  In the end, the third sector was a matter of simply doing what he’d done all day.  Mater took the checkered flag for his first win and a well deserved one.

The battle for the rest of the podium wasn’t nearly as simple.  Nero found himself in a tight drag race down the back straight with Jamonito and Jaronimus and had to give it his all to keep up.  Suprisingly, the three of them all of a sudden found themselves with a hard charging Danger Wheel in their rear view mirrors.  Mater’s teammate caught the challengers in Turn 6 to make it a 4 car battle.  Jaap and Launch had meanwhile taken a commanding lead over the rest of the field and were ready to pounce should anyone falter.

As a quick aside, it should be noted that the battle at the back of the field wasn’t any less intense.  Ice didn’t win any friends when he cut in front of the Stig on the racing line in Turn 4.  The shunt forced the Stig to a near stop in order to avoid a collision, but the damage was done.  He found himself floundering along in last place the rest of the race.

Back to the challengers, the battle through Turns 7 and 8 proved tight.  First Nero was in front, then Jaronimus, then Danger Wheel.  It all came down to Turn 10, the final corner.  Jamonito was the one to take charge, finding himself with the right amount of speed and tyres to burn as he ploughed onto the pit straight.  Nero, on the other hand, couldn’t muster the strength to keep up.  Jamonito flew past and Jaronimus followed close behind as Danger Wheel just missed getting on the podium.

Four cars fighting for 2nd place

Nero’s sputtering finish was to the gain of Jaap and Launch.  Both drivers had managed to stay close enough behind to take advantage of his misstep, forcing him to settle for 7th.  The Cobalt driver was left stunned after having been in second place just moments earlier.

In the end, all 10 cars finished the race, which given the amount of wheel-to-wheel racing that occurred was quite remarkable.  Only minor body damage occurred throughout the race.  Mater’s first win leaves only Launch Bornado and the two Osito Racing Company rookies as those without victories.  Despite a formal protest to the race stewards from the Stig, no disciplinary action was taken against Ice for cutting in front.

Mater became the third driver to win from pole position and has proven a master at Austin.  Last season, he finished 2nd in the same race.  He goes from last to 3rd in the driver standings.  A disastrous debut race for Osito Racing Company’s rookies in Belgium is now clearly in the rear view mirror.  Jamonito and Jaronimus delivered from their high starting positions and became the first pair of teammates in SBMRL history to finish 2nd and 3rd in the same race.  Jaap’s 5th place finish is his lowest ever.  After two races, only 5 points separate the top 5 drivers.

On the team front, Red Bull takes over the top spot from Regency Motors thanks to the 3rd highest scoring race ever.  It’s the first time Regency Motors has had to look up at another team.  Osito Racing Company jumps up to 3rd place, while Scandinavian Blitz earned the minimum possible 3 points to put them in the cellar.

Belgium Recap

The 2016-17 season opener was taken on a comfortably cool day at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.  The traditionally unpredictable weather remained dry throughout, leaving the cars to race freely.

As it was the opening race of the season, the starting grid was seeded randomly just prior to the start of the race.  For the remainder of the season, it will follow the SBMRL procedure of starting in reverse order of the current driver standings.  Here then, is what the lineup at Spa looked like, along with their new liveries for this year:

P1 – Ice (Frank) – white Williams-Martini, white tail
P2 – Jaronimus Maximus (Geoff) – green Lotus/Caterham, yellow nose stripe
P3 – Nero (Jason) – white Williams-Martini, black tail
P4 – The Stig (Jason) – red Ferrari, white engine cover
P5 – Captain Slow (Jason) – red Ferrari, black engine cover
P6 – Mater (Ryan) – blue Red Bull, blue tail
P7 – Jamonito del Verde (Geoff) – green Lotus/Caterham, white nose stripes
P8 – Jaap Snellrijder (Frank) – yellow Renault, black tail
P9 – Danger Wheel (Ryan) – blue Red Bull, purple tail
P10 – Launch Bornado (Frank) – yellow Renault, yellow tail

There was drama from the moment the lights went out to signal the start of the race.  Nero stalled his car at the 3rd grid position and was immediately caught up with by Mater, who had a flying start out of 6th.  It didn’t stop there, either.  While Ice was able to get through La Source ahead of everyone, the rest of the pack fought their way through the tight corner.  Jaronimus was sandwiched between Mater and the Stig, losing a bit of bodywork.  Shortly thereafter, Nero’s race went from bad to worse as not only did he find himself all the way back in last place, Launch Bornado gave him some damage on the charge down the inside.

Spa, Lap 1, La Source

Race start chaos

After the front pack flew through Eau Rouge, the trailing pack found themselves in a bit of a pickle.  With 6 cars all trying to find their way through at top speed, the odd man out was Jaronimus.  He had been on a particularly slow uptake out of La Source and when he went to charge through the high speed Eau Rouge-Radillon combination, found it all stoppered up.  He was forced to slam on his brakes, leaving them near the end of their life in his effort to avoid crashing into the back of Jaap Snellrijder.

While Ice and Captain Slow took a moderate lead, the rest of the field battled to catch up.  With Jaronimus falling from 2nd to last and having to drive extremely cautiously just to make it to the pits, things were not looking good for the Osito Racing Company.  Then it got even worse.  The hard charge into Les Combes meant that Jamonito suffered the exact same misfortune as his teammate, a desperate slam on the brakes just to stay in the race.

Spa, Lap 1, Les Combes

Jamonito’s brakes save him in the middle of Les Combes congestion

The second sector saw a gradual stratification of the field as cars began to spread out along the track.  This was largely due to the technical nature of that section.  The third sector with its long Blanchimont straight leading into the Bus Stop chicane then became the place were it started to come back together.  Mater caught up to Captain Slow and Ice, leaving the latter down in 3rd place.  Behind them, the rest of the field did their best to join them.  Jaap was the leader of that charge, while Jaronimus saw his push result in a spin coming out of Stavelot.  That spin effectively ended his chance of being competitive.  At certain other points on the track, such a spin wouldn’t have been as costly.  In fact, Nero proved the point just a bit further on.  As it was, Jaronimus was inching along a stretch of track where cars are typically at full throttle.

Mater’s charge resulted in his being the first to cross the line for the second lap, finally forcing his way into the race lead.  Unfortunately, he’d be out of the race moments later.  His trip through La Source took him over the debris that had been left there on the first lap and he was forced to retire with a broken suspension.

Spa, Lap 2, La Source

Mater’s day comes to an end

Ignoring Mater’s wreckage, Ice pushed on with the second lap.  Captain Slow followed close behind and Jaap made every effort to join them.  The rest of the field, sans Jaronimus, almost literally piled into the pits.  The instigator was Nero who, having spun out at the Bus Stop chicane, blocked access to pit lane.  In the end, all five of Nero, Launch, Jamonito, the Stig, and Danger Wheel were in pit lane at the same time.

As Ice continued to lead through the second sector, Jaap managed to catch up with Captain Slow in the battle for second.  Jamonito emerged as the primary challenger for 4th place, but the Stig was close behind and closed the gap on entry to Rivage.

Ice leads with Jaap and Captain Slow in hot pursuit

Jaap’s attempts to get past Captain Slow resulted in a minor collision along the short straight leading into Stavelot.  Last year’s champion was carrying speed, and flew into second place on the back straight.  Ice, however, was flawless over the final half lap, and there was really nothing anyone could do to catch him.  Jaap closed the gap enough to make it close, but Ice emerged victorious.  Captain Slow pulled in with an uncontested 3rd place to round out the podium.

The battle for 4th was an entirely different matter.  Jamonito had taken control of the position through sector 2, but a number of cars were closing that gap.  Initially led by the Stig, Danger Wheel passed him at Stavelot with Launch and Nero on the charge.  Launch took the corner just right, but Nero carried a bit too much speed and found himself in the barriers, out of the race.

img_1318

Jamonito leads on the back straight just prior to Nero’s crash

Danger Wheel’s charge along the back straight was inspired and he was able to pass Jamonito on entry to the Bus Stop.  The latter was nursing some severely worn tyres, and that left the door open for both Launch and the Stig to scuttle past.  After entering the third sector with 4th place seemingly in his grasp, Jamonito found himself 7th across the line.

Not to be forgotten, Jaronimus slogged along in last place.  With Nero having crashed out at Stavelot, there was still something to strive for.  Namely, surviving long enough to secure 8th place.  The Osito Racing Company rookie took the opportunity to string some turns together and get a proper feel for the car.  Emboldened by the sight of the long Blanchimont straight and with nothing on the line, he simply floored it the rest of the way.  It was his best driving of the day… until he crashed at the Bus Stop.

ORC management was said to be less than amused.  “When the track was full and everything was on the line, he drove slow,” was the disgruntled comment.  “When the rest of the field has finished and he’s got nothing to lose, he suddenly goes fast enough to wreck the car!  Now we’ve got to go about fixing it before Austin.”  Perhaps he’ll have better luck in Texas.

Spa proved to be an extremely challenging track for all drivers.  Having an additional team on the grid certainly meant that driving at the front was an advantage.  Ice and Captain Slow made the most of it, while Jaap somehow managed to successfully find a way through all the chaos behind them.  Ice is now the first driver to lead the drivers standings other than Jaap.  It’s hard to pick a bigger disappointment between Jaronimus’ struggles after starting 2nd on the grid and Mater’s crash, but we’ll go with Mater.  An inspired drive from 6th to 1st at the halfway mark went for naught just seconds into the second lap.

Regency Motors began the year in the same way that they finished last year, atop the team standings.  The margin is slim, but both drivers managed large gains from the back of the grid.  Ice’s win gives Cobalt their 4th victory, which is twice what any other team has achieved.  Nero’s crash puts them at the back in terms of ability to actually see the checkered flag.  Scandinavian Blitz is a close 3rd, while Red Bull and Osito will have some catching up to do.

Perspectives

It’s always fun to compare the recent race results with things that have happened in the past.  As stated above, the win for Cobalt is their 4th overall.  No other team has won more than two races.  Those 4 victories have all come in the last 5 races run.  The only recent race they missed out on was Sochi.  On the other hand, their points haul has been significantly lower than expected.  The run started with a dominating 1-2 finish at Sebring, but since then, the team’s second car has never finished higher than 7th.

Speaking of failing to finish, Nero has now crashed in 3 of his last 4 races.  In those races, the only time he’s seen the checkered flag was his victory at Valencia.  He won at Sebring, too, so he’s literally been all or nothing for 5 straight events.

Osito Racing Company’s 10 points in their maiden race were quite a few less than what they were hoping for.  They can take some solace in the fact that last year, Scandinavian Blitz managed just 8 in the opener and Red Bull managed the same 10 at Singapore.

Individual drivers had some interesting trivia as well.  Jaap never finished lower than 4th last season, but he also never once finished in 2nd place.  Naturally, that’s where he finished in the first race of this year.  Captain Slow’s 3rd place finish after starting 5th on the grid marks the first time that he’s moved up more than one slot from his starting position.  He went from 6th to 5th at Buddh last year, and he won from pole in Singapore, but dropped position in every other race.  Similarly, Danger Wheel went from 9th to 4th for a 5 position improvement.  Last year, he never moved up.  His best races were his win at Buddh and a 2nd place finish at Hockenheim, and in both cases he started in those same slots.
