Valencia Recap

With the standings about as close as they could possibly be, the SBMRL field took to Valencia for the final race of the 2016-17 season.  Those further back in the standings would be racing for pride and a chance to play spoiler, but a good five cars all had a shot at taking the championship.  The starting grid looked as follows:

P1 – Nero (Ryan)
P2 – Captain Slow (Jason)
P3 – The Stig (Jason)
P4 – Ice (Frank)
P5 – Mater (Ryan)
P6 – Danger Wheel (Ryan)
P7 – Jamonito del Verde (Geoff)
P8 – Jaronimus Maximus (Geoff)
P9 – Launch Bornado (Frank)
P10 – Jaap Snellrijder (Frank)

The field managed a clean start with everyone proceeding cautiously off the line for the season’s deciding race.  The first pair of corners, Principal 1 and Veles e Vents, caused a great deal of compression among the contenders.  In fact, all 10 cars were piled into Veles e Vents in short order.  Launch Bornado was forced to lean heavily on the brakes, and would struggle with them the rest of the first lap.  Both cars of the Osito Racing Company suffered minor collision damage as they, too, tried to work their way forward.

Everyone squeezes into Veles e Vents

The pack moved on towards Malvarrosa with Danger Wheel joining the front four Scandinavian Blitz and Cobalt drivers.  Nero suffered some damage as Captain Slow misjudged the slowdown heading into the turn.  He then clipped Nero’s front wing again as he tried to sneak past in the middle of the corner.  Sadly, it was Nero’s own teammate, Ice, who ultimately knocked him out of the race just as they were coming out onto the bridge straight.

Nero knocked out

At this point, the Stig had managed to stay ahead of the chaos behind and charged on towards Nazaret.  Jaronimus Maximus had flown through Malvarrosa with speed and carried that onto the bridge straight, with Ice and Launch close behind.  The latter of whom had managed to weave through the field after starting all the way back in 9th.  With Danger Wheel running 5th, each team was represented in the top 5.  That would only last briefly, however, as Jaronimus’ speed heading into Nazaret proved too great.  He was unable to find his way around the Stig without bumping hard into his rival, ending his race then and there.

Jaronimus hits the Stig

With two cars out of the race and less than half a lap completed, the rest of the field took a bit more care.  At this point, Launch and the Stig began establishing themselves as the two contenders at the front.  Danger Wheel, Ice, Captain Slow, and Jamonito battled it out in the middle, while Jaap and Mater struggled to keep up with the pace.

The third sector was where Launch was able to get an edge on the Stig.  He was able to find a better line through Grao, coming out of it with the speed needed to smoothly run through Principal 2 and into the pits.  While the Stig struggled, Danger Wheel took advantage and caught up.  Similarly, his teammate, Mater was able to get the jump on the middle pack, leaving Jaap alone in back.

Launch finishes Lap 1 in front

As the second lap began, Launch, Danger Wheel, and the Stig were far ahead of the rest of the field.  Ice skipped the pits in an effort to bypass his rivals, while Regency Motors pitted Jaap quickly to get him back in the thick of things.  Jamonito was the last car to make it out of the pits and embark on his second circuit.

Into Malvarrosa, Launch continued to hold a comfortable margin over Danger Wheel, who had by now established the same over the Stig.  However, Ice, Mater, and Jamonito had now taken a bit of an edge over Jaap and Captain Slow at the back.  The field was so spread out that Launch was on his way into Grao when the trailers were just getting into Malvarrosa.

All spread out

The bridge straight was taken at speed by Jamonito, who was able to use that speed to charge forward and catch the Stig at Nazaret.  Ice and Mater weren’t quite up to the same task, but it was Jaap who was charging now from the back.  He had managed, like Jamonito, to carry speed down the bridge straight in an effort to make his charge.

As Launch and Danger Wheel navigated through Grao with little suspense, the battles behind them were tight.  The Stig and Jamonito battled for third place through Nazaret, and behind them, Mater and Ice followed closely.  They left little room for Jaap, who was forced over debris left on the track by Jaronimus’s crash on lap 1.  Jaap’s suspension snapped, leaving two of the top 3 drivers in the standings out of the race.

Jaap’s second straight DNF

As Launch rounded Principal 2 for an uncontested march to the finish, Danger Wheel followed in procession.  The battle for third place, however, had a new entry in it.  With the Stig and Jamonito fighting it out, Ice had managed to force his car into the mix.  He came into Grao with speed, and due to the effort needed to get there and lack of a pit stop, had worn his gearbox down completely.  Unfortunately, that meant that he carried too much speed through the corner, and couldn’t keep it on the track.  His momentary shot at 3rd place wiped out.

Ice coning through Grao, just before his luck ran out

Grao proved to be the undoing of other races, too, although not in quite as severe a fashion.  While the Stig was unable to carry speed through the corner, Jamonito was, and he used that to set up a pass around the final bend of Principal 2.  From there it was a drag race to the finish that saw him make good on that advantage.

The final finishers came down to Mater and Captain Slow.  Mater fell foul of Grao’s speed trap, though, and spun out as he came out of the corner.  That was all that Captain Slow needed to pass him and take an easy 5th place, with Mater righting his car and finishing a lonely 6th.

Having never won a race until last time out in Magny-Cours, Launch’s victory at Valencia marks the first time a driver has ever won back-to-back races in the SBMRL. It also makes him this season’s championship driver.  Jamonito’s 3rd place finish, coupled with DNF’s from Jaap and Jaronimus allow him to leapfrog them into 2nd place.

Danger Wheel’s 2nd place finish didn’t quite do enough to catch Jaap and Jaronimus, but it was his best showing for the year.  With the Stig in 4th place, we once again had 4 different teams represented in the top 4 finishers.  This is the first time that’s happened in consecutive races.

Nero’s early DNF made the battle to avoid the cellar end quickly. There really wasn’t much that Nero could have done, and no driver has suffered as much damage in such a short space of time as Nero did in Malvarrosa.  His teammate, Ice, marked his first ever DNF.

At the team level, Launch’s win sealed the deal for Regency Motors to repeat as the team champions.  Newcomer Osito Racing Company takes a superb second place, which is all the more impressive after their debut race in Spa was a bit of a disaster.  Scandinavian Blitz’s strong showing easily put them ahead of Cobalt to avoid last place.

Magny-Cours Recap

A beautiful, clear day with highs in the mid-60’s welcomed the SBMRL to hte Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours in France.  With good weather and a number of high speed straights, the day was set for a thrilling ride.  The cars lined up as follows:

P1 – Captain Slow (Jason)
P2 – Nero (Frank)
P3 – Mater (Ryan)
P4 – The Stig (Jason)
P5 – Ice (Ryan)
P6 – Launch Bornado (Frank)
P7 – Jamonito del Verde (Frank)
P8 – Danger Wheel (Ryan)
P9 – Jaronimus Maximus (Jason)
P10 – Jaap Snellrijder (Frank)

Both the Stig and Launch Bornado managed to time the lights perfectly, getting the jump on Mater and Ice, respectively.  Battles commenced immediately up and down the full length of the field as the cars raced to the first corner.  Captain Slow took the early lead, with the Stig, Launch, and Nero all in hot pursuit.  The Golf straight saw a lot of passing, with the Stig failing to keep up with the front runners and getting caught up by the likes of Jaronimus and Jaap.  Ice and the Red Bull drivers joined Jamonito at the back.

Nero takes to the inside in Adelaide

The second sector first saw the Stig, then Launch, take the lead as the battles at the front continued to go back and forth.  Captain Slow kept up as best possible, but Nero started to fade.  That allowed Jaap and Jaronimus to reel him in.  Jaap then found speed to burn through the straight leading to Imola and was among the front runners in short order.

Launch in the lead

Sector three didn’t see a lot of movement in position other than Jamonito beginning to sneak up on the midfield.  When they came round to the pits, Captain Slow was first across the line, skipping out on a stop due to a clean first lap.  Launch had nursed his tyres well but found an adjustment to his abused gear box was in order.  That gave Jaap the chance to complete lap 1 in second place as he barreled on.  Ice was the third and final driver to skip his pit stop, gaining several places after having fallen all the way to last coming around the final bend.

Ice charges past the pits

The second lap saw Captain Slow leading the pair of yellow Regency Motors cars down the long Golf straight.  Ice’s gambit allowed him to slide into 4th position.  Launch Bornado was the driver who handled the Adelaide corner the smoothest, and he was first in, first out, but without good speed heading into Nurburgring.  That allowed Captain Slow to gain on him.  In contrast, Jaap’s inability to emulate his teammate left him battling with Ice and a charging Jamonito.  The rest of the field followed closely, with the lone exception of Danger Wheel, whose opening of the second lap left a lot to be desired.

The midfield converges after the Golf straight

Skipping back to the midfield runners, who looked to be well behind Captain Slow at this stage, things began to shift over the course of the second sector.  The most obvious and shocking event of the race was seeing standings leader Jaap Snellrijder pull off to the side of the 180 corner after his engine gave out.

Jaap’s engine gives out

What was far less obvious as it was occurring were the rise of Mater and Jamonito.  Jamonito had caught up with Ice and Jaap in the Adelaide corner, and kept up with them both until Jaap’s engine demise.  He was subsequently able to catch Captain Slow in Imola.

Mater, on the other hand, was bottom 3 until an inspired 2nd sector charge.  He found speed aplenty in Imola, reeling in Ice a short while later.  While Launch cruised to his first victory, Captain Slow saw both Jamonito and Mater pass him by around the final bends.

The battle for 2nd comes down to the wire

Nero managed to pip Ice for 5th place as they crossed the line, and the Cobalt teammates finished one after the other for the 4th time this year.  The Stig’s 7th place finish was extremely disappointing after an extremely promising first lap.  Jaronimus finished just ahead of Danger Wheel to round out the field.

There were a lot of interesting things about the race in France, but the first two are obviously the diametrically opposite fates of the Regency Motors drivers.  Launch Bornado finally wins a race in his 16th attempt.  Despite a fair amount of success, he was the only driver from the inaugural season who had yet to tally a win.  That leaves Jamonito as the only active driver without a win.  Jamonito’s 2nd place is the 4th time this year that he’s been the bridesmaid, so he has certainly had his share of success.  Mater rounded out the podium in 3rd place.  After his victory in Austin earlier this season, it marks his second podium of the year and the first time he’s ever finished in 3rd place.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Jaap’s failure to see the checkered flag marks the first time he’s suffered such a fate.  Given that he was as high as 2nd place during the race, that’s a tough pill to swallow.  For race fans, though, it’s a great boon.  The driver standings are now about as tight as they can get heading into the final race of the season.  Jaap holds a 2 point lead over Launch and Jaronimus, who are tied.  Jamonito is within 10 points of the lead trio.

A final note of trivia comes from the fact that for the first time in SBMRL history, the top 5 cars came from 5 different teams.  Jaronimus finishing ahead of Danger Wheel was the only thing preventing the bottom half from being a mirror image of the top.

On the team level, Regency Motors extended their lead over Osito Racing Company but only slightly.  The team title will come down to those two teams, as Red Bull is just a few points too far back to take the crown.  They can, however, steal second place away from Osito if things work out just right.  The bottom two teams scored the exact same number of points as each other.

With Jaap’s win in Sochi, Regency Motors have back-to-back wins for the first time.  The only other team to have accomplished that is Cobalt, who’ve done it twice.  Nero and Ice won at Sebring and Hockenheim last year, then had season-spanning back-to-back victories with Valencia and Spa-Francorchamps.  There was only one race between those pairs of wins, meaning that Nero and Ice won 4 out of 5 in that stretch.

Russia Recap

Sochi, Russia welcomed the SBMRL on March 17th as race #7 on the 9 race 2016-17 calendar.  It was a brisk day with highs in the low 50’s, but that didn’t stop the fans from coming out.  Here’s how the cars took to the grid:

P1 – Nero (Frank)
P2 – Ice (Jason)
P3 – Captain Slow (Jason)
P4 – The Stig (Jason)
P5 – Mater (Jason)
P6 – Jamonito del Verde (Geoff)
P7 – Danger Wheel (Ryan)
P8 – Launch Bornado (Frank)
P9 – Jaap Snellrijder (Frank)
P10 – Jaronimus Maximus (Geoff)

The race started cleanly, with Jamonito timing the lights perfectly for a fast start at the middle of the grid.  He able to get ahead of Mater, causing the Red Bull driver to suffer minor body damage after getting sandwiched with Captain Slow.  Nero and the Stig were the first into Turn 1, establishing the early hierarchy.  By Turn 4, Nero had moved out front for an early advantage.  The Stig and Captain Slow battled for 2nd place with a larger group following behind.

Nero out front

The early mover was Jaap, who caught up with the Scandinavian Blitz drivers by Turn 5, showing once again that Sochi’s track suits him just fine.  By Turn 8 he would find himself up in 2nd place.  It was here on the first lap that Ice, Mater, and Jamonito made their push to catch up, while Jaronimus, Danger Wheel, and Launch languished far behind.

As Nero rounded the final two corners, Mater made his move on the inside of The Stig in Turn 8.  Unfortunately, he clipped his opponent and was sent into the  barriers and out of the race.  The Stig miraculously escaped any damage of his own, and was even able to keep up with his teammate.

Mater crashes out

Among the front runners, the key moment of the race to this point surrounded the pits.  Nero dove for fresh tyres and minor repairs, while Jaap decided to press on with the car as is.  Jamonito and Ice followed Nero in, but the Stig followed Jaap’s lead in skipping a tyre change.  When all was said and done, Jaap found himself in the lead, with Nero in 2nd and the Stig in 3rd place.

Jaap edges ahead of Nero

Jaap established a small lead with smooth running through the first three corners on the second lap.  Ice found speed aplenty down the pit straight and managed to catch up with Nero in a Cobalt battle for second.  Jamonito kept pace with the Stig.  Amongst those trailing, Captain Slow was once again living up to his name, allowing Danger Wheel by and finding Launch soon hot on his tail.  Jaronimous, had a disastrous third sector of lap 1 and would never again challenge even a single car the rest of the way.

The second lap didn’t have near as much drama as the first lap.  Jaap never put a wheel wrong through sector 2, and despite Nero and Ice doing their best to follow, they couldn’t capitalize on a mistake when no mistakes were being made. To their credit, the two drivers who’ve had the worst season to date proved why they were so formidable last season, pushing Jaap the whole way and keeping their challengers in the distance.

The leaders spread out

The battle of note, therefore, was for fourth position.  Danger Wheel took advantage of mistakes by the Stig and Jamonito to catch up with them in Turn 3. He then passed them in Turn 4 as both were a bit slow on entry and he was able to scoot past them.  This would’ve been the time that Captain Slow caught up with his teammate, but he too wasn’t able to find the right line at Turn 4.

The one moment where it looked like Nero or Ice might actually be able to catch up with Jaap was at Turn 9.  Having completely worn out his tyres over the course of the two laps, Jaap had to be extremely cautious around the final two bends.  Nero and Ice, on the other hand, were charging.  Carefully navigating Turn 10, however, Jaap had just enough speed to cross the line ahead of Ice, who came from as far back as 8th on lap 1 to finish 2nd.  Nero followed in 3rd.

Ice and Nero can’t quite catch Jaap

Danger Wheel drove a professional second lap to take an uneventful fourth place.  The battle for 5th place came to a head in Turn 8, with Jamonito and the Stig getting there first, but Launch and Captain Slow hot on their heels.  Navigating through debris left on the track earlier, Jamonito found his way to the front of the group.  With plenty of life left in his tyres, he was free to push around the final bend, ultimately finishing closer to Danger Wheel than those he’d been fighting with.

Launch sneaks past the Stig

The final placement between the Scandinavian Blitz teammates and Launch came down to how hard they’d pushed earlier.  The Stig had to take the slower, outside line to keep his car on the track, while Launch was able to sneak around him on the inside, and then bring it home down the straight.

Sochi marks the third time we’ve raced a track that we raced last year, and Jaap’s victory makes him the first driver to win twice on the same track.  It’s also his second victory of the year, coming after a pair of disappointing 7th pace finishes since his win in Monaco.  Coupled with Jaronimus’ worst race of the season, Jaap edges out his Osito Racing Company rival to move back into first place.

Ice’s 2nd place finish pulls him all the way from 9th up to 6th in the driver standings, while Nero gets out of the cellar for the first time since the first race of the season.  Danger Wheel finshed 4th for the fourth time this year, which pushes him up to 3rd in the overall standings.

Intriguingly, the Sochi results have left us with a pair of ties in the driver standings.  Launch and Jamonito are now tied for 4th place, just 3 points behind Danger Wheel, while Mater and the Stig are tied for 7th, just 4 points behind Ice.

At the team level, Cobalt’s 33 points are easily their best of the season, and second best ever.  It puts them back ahead of Scandinavian Blitz.  Regency Motors, meanwhile, takes back a slim lead over Osito Racing Company.  Red Bull stays in 3rd.
