Zach Matthews never let the Samurai get in a groove. The right-hander used his bread and butter, his fastball, to pitch the Sun Kings to a 3-1 win. In 8 innings, Matthews surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 3. He allowed no runs. The win brings the Sun Kings to 12-17, a soft start for a team that made the playoffs just last season.
Steve Kelly drew 1 walk in 4 trips to the plate against the Samurai. In the top of the first inning, he hit a sacrifice fly, putting San Diego in front, 1-0.
