{"id":441,"date":"2016-06-09T21:00:41","date_gmt":"2016-06-09T21:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/?p=441"},"modified":"2016-09-09T18:13:48","modified_gmt":"2016-09-09T18:13:48","slug":"2015-16-season-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/2016\/06\/09\/2015-16-season-in-review\/","title":{"rendered":"2015-16 Season In Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The inaugural season of the SBMRL was filled with memorable moments. \u00a0There were dramatic finishes and foregone conclusions, risks rewarded and agonizing crashes. \u00a0Here, then, is a look back at the key moments and overarching stories that developed throughout.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_309\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0649.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-309\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-309\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0649-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"New Liveries Unveiled at Hockenheim\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0649-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0649-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0649-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0649-800x600.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0649.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New Liveries Unveiled at Hockenheim<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The season opened with 9 cars entering the field at Austin. \u00a0Qualifying was done randomly, and then a field full of inexperienced drivers floored it and we were off! \u00a0Not knowing what to expect from their cars, this race saw the highest number of crashes. \u00a0Stanley Washington, in his only race of the year, was the last car to start the second lap but finished all the way up in 4th after a few of those crashes and a couple of passes. \u00a0Jaap Snellrijder got the win after a daring charge down the back straight helped him catch up. \u00a0Nero hung on for 5th place despite spinning out twice, and Mater came home in 2nd.<\/p>\n<p>We then headed to the illuminated Singapore night race, where Captain Slow fought off all comers to win after starting on pole. \u00a0Mater&#8217;s fortunes were quite different, crashing out while trying to keep up with Launch Bornado, Jaap, and the Stig.<\/p>\n<p>In India, Danger Wheel managed to repeat Captain Slow&#8217;s pole to victory feat despite falling all the way to 5th after a lap. \u00a0Launch was right on his heels until the very end, where he was able to block off the line that Launch needed to pass. \u00a0The Stig&#8217;s race was ruined with a pit lane debacle, while the good Captain and Jaap came from distance to pass Ice and Mater in the final corners.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0455.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-212\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0455-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Monaco Lap 2 Swimming Pool\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0455-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0455-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0455-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0455-800x600.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0455.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Monaco saw Mater stall at the start of the race, the only driver to do so all season. \u00a0The Stig made Scandinavian Blitz the first team to win multiple races, and\u00a0also became the 3rd consecutive driver to win from pole. \u00a0Jaap fought his way from 8th to 4th for the 3rd consecutive race, too. \u00a0Despite others getting close, Jaap was developing a reputation for refusing to stay in the back of the pack.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_0553.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-278\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_0553-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Sebring - Nero's Dominance\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_0553-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_0553-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_0553-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_0553-800x600.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_0553.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sebring saw the most lopsided race of the year, with both Cobalt drivers hitting their lines just right. \u00a0Nero was the runaway winner, with Ice a distance second. \u00a0It also featured Launch Bornado charging through the pack from last to first, only to fall all the way to last again.<\/p>\n<p>The win in Sebring brought Nero to within 4 points of Jaap for the driver&#8217;s championship, the closest it was all season. \u00a0He then foolishly tried to thread himself between three cars on the Hockenheim Ring to end his race barely after it had begun. \u00a0He sat and and watched his teammate Ice take the checkered flag after an inspired start to the race brought him to the front of the pack.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0747.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-380\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0747-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Sochi - Lap1 Contention\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0747-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0747-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0747-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0747-800x600.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0747.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sochi was full of drama as Jaap again came charging from the back and a number of other positions were highly contested. \u00a0The early story was Ice taking out his own teammate, leaving Nero out of the cockpit for a second straight race. \u00a0Jaap, who started every race in last place except Austin, managed to pass four cars early on. \u00a0That left him only Mater to catch for the win, which he pulled off late on the second lap. \u00a0The final bit of drama came as Captain Slow was able to slipstream past Danger Wheel for 4th place right at the finish line.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_0836.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-464\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_0836-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Valencia - Lap 2 Sector 1\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_0836-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_0836-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_0836-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_0836-800x600.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_0836.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, Valencia left us with what was the most tightly contested race of the season. \u00a0The Stig led a higher percentage of the race than any driver had all year, but Nero caught him at the last possible moment. \u00a0Launch came from 7th to 3rd with just two turns remaining. \u00a0Captain Slow slipstreamed past Danger Wheel right at the end for the second time in a row, and Mater spun out on the final corner, letting Ice come from way back to finish in 7th.<\/p>\n<h3>final Standings<\/h3>\n<p>After winning in Austin, Jaap never looked back. \u00a0Despite starting at the back of the grid in all subsequent races, he never finished lower than 4th, which he did 4 times. \u00a0Launch Bornado took second by a nose over Nero, whose crashes hurt considerably. \u00a0Despite being the only driver other than Mater not to win a race this year, Launch led everyone with 5 podiums. \u00a0Ice was one of the least consistent drivers, suffering a pair of 7th place finishes in the final two races to drop all the way to 4th.<\/p>\n<p>Danger Wheel and the Stig tied for 5th, thanks to Captain Slow&#8217;s last minute pass that dropped the green team&#8217;s leading driver one slot. \u00a0The Captain lived up to his name most of the time, with his win in Singapore being the only finish higher than 4th. \u00a0Mater&#8217;s pair of second place finishes weren&#8217;t quite enough to get him out of the cellar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Driver_Standings.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-507\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Driver_Standings-300x219.png\" alt=\"2015_Driver_Standings\" width=\"500\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Driver_Standings-300x219.png 300w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Driver_Standings-768x560.png 768w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Driver_Standings-1024x746.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Driver_Standings-800x583.png 800w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Driver_Standings.png 1168w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the team level, it was\u00a0Regency Motors and a hard fought battle with\u00a0Cobalt in the middle of the season. \u00a0Nero&#8217;s second crash and Jaap&#8217;s victory in Sochi put an end to any hope of catching the red cars. \u00a0The Green Team and Scandinavian Blitz battled it out behind them, trading place and ultimately finishing just 3 points apart.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Team_Standings.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-508\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Team_Standings-300x219.png\" alt=\"2015_Team_Standings\" width=\"500\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Team_Standings-300x219.png 300w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Team_Standings-768x560.png 768w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Team_Standings-1024x746.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Team_Standings-800x583.png 800w, http:\/\/www.rhinopeel.com\/sbmrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2015_Team_Standings.png 1168w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The inaugural season of the SBMRL was filled with memorable moments. \u00a0There were dramatic finishes and foregone conclusions, risks rewarded and agonizing crashes. \u00a0Here, then, is a look back at the key moments and overarching stories that developed throughout.
