Sunday, October 8th, 1876: Time's Up: Briggs to Retire
It's a somber day for Mutuals fans as Ed Briggs announced that he will retire at the end of the 1876 season. The New York third baseman attributed his retirement to his age and loss of skills.

"I'm not the type of player I want to be anymore," he said. "It's harder go out there and be competitive. I'm not at the end of my rope yet, but I've seen guys hang around too long. I'm not going to be one of them."

Saturday, July 29th, 1876: Lamacchia Cruises to Shutout
Sometimes even Billy Lamacchia of Boston isn't sure which pitcher will show up when he takes the mound.

"I've been good sometimes and bad sometimes," he said.

This time he looked good and made the New York Mutuals look bad, blanking them by the score of 7-0.

Lamacchia tossed a 6-hit shutout against them, totaling no strikeouts and giving up no walks.

In 8 starts this season Lamacchia has recorded a 4-3 record and a 1.41 ERA.
Thursday, July 27th, 1876: Mutuals-Reds Trade Announced
New York and Cincinnati have agreed in principle to a trade. The Mutuals will send 29-year old shortstop Jim Henkle to the Reds for 38-year old reliever Frank Sukla. The deal is expected to be finalized shortly and the clubs will be introducing their new players to the press when the paperwork is complete.
