Wednesday, August 9th, 1876: Buteau Stretches Hit String to 20
The hot bat of Dark Blues left fielder Ed Buteau continues to churn out hit after hit, game after game. His consecutive-game hitting streak now numbers 20 games after he went 2-for-5 in today's 9-6 loss to the Athletics at Hartford Ball Club Grounds.
E. Buteau grounded out in the 1st, grounded out in the 3rd, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and flied out in the 9th.

Buteau is batting .321 in 1876 with no home runs, 20 RBIs and 33 runs scored. He has 62 hits in 193 at-bats.
Saturday, July 8th, 1876: Gotcher Tosses Shutout
Joe Gotcher of the Philadelphia Athletics was really in the zone as he mowed down the Cincinnati hitters 1-0 in a sterling mound performance.

"I'm feeling good overall," he said.

"I'm executing my pitches, I'm able to hit my spots and I'm getting outs in key situations."

Gotcher shut down the Cincinnati Reds, blanking them on 3 hits while registering no strikeouts and no walks.

This year Gotcher has a 15-3 record with a 2.04 ERA.
Thursday, June 29th, 1876: Courtright Blisters Chicago
John Courtright told the press after his 5-hit day, "Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate. He wants to hit the ball hard."

Well, that's just what Courtright of the Philadelphia Athletics did against the Chicago White Stockings. He went to the plate 5 times and 5 times he delivered base hits, much to the chagrin of the White Stockings, who suffered a 11-3 defeat.

"Not much that I can say," offered the losing manager, "he just hammered the heck out of us."

J. Courtright singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 8th.

Batting .217 to date, Courtright has no home runs and 12 RBIs.
