Monday, October 26th, 1874: Yawn on Fire: 5-8 for Boston
John Yawn exploded for a barrage of base hits today at South End Grounds. The Boston center fielder had a field day against the Philadelphia White Stockings, finishing with a 5-8 day and a spot in the record book.

"It's a shame that we lost the game. It's really hard to enjoy what I did today," he said, lamenting the 12-11 loss. "You would think 5 hits would do it."

Asked about his great day, he replied, "My hitting philosophy is pretty simple. I focus just to see the ball and try to get a good pitch."

Well, Yawn must have focused at least 5 times and apparently got some good pitches, too. It was one of his best days ever with the bat.

J. Yawn singled in the 1st, hit a two-run single in the 2nd, flied out in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit an RBI triple in the 7th, grounded out in the 8th, singled in the 10th and grounded out in the 12th.

Looking at his season stats, Yawn has compiled a .270 batting average and a .273 on-base percentage, while hitting 1 home run and driving in 18 runs.
